I3C Portfolio Qualified on AMI Firmware Platform

TOKYO, Japan ― Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced that AMI, a firmware and software solutions partner, has qualified the Renesas I3C bus extension products for its MegaRAC® SP-X Remote Management Firmware. Having the I3C devices on AMI’s approved vendor list enables an easy migration path for customers shifting their DDR5 platforms and boards from I2C or other legacy expansion specifications to the new high-speed I3C specification.

The IMX3102 2:1 bus multiplexer, IMX3112 1:2 bus expander, and DDR5 SPD Hub SPD5118 devices provide maximum design flexibility for engineers implementing I3C Basic as a system management bus for control plane designs across a variety of applications, including data center and server applications, enterprise, factory automation, and communications equipment. The IMX and SPD devices are ideal when there may be multiple masters, a large number of endpoint devices, and long traces – all of which can impact bus complexity and signal integrity.

Renesas’ expanded I3C portfolio ecosystem enables both software and hardware customers to design in the Renesas IMX and SPD products with confidence. The I3C portfolio was previously qualified with hardware, Baseboard Management Controller (BMC), and other silicon-on-chip partners.

As DDR5 continues to gather momentum in the industry, the I3C interface is gaining acceptance as a high-speed control interface for applications requiring faster communication between host and peripheral or slave devices. I3C’s 12.5 MHz speeds significantly outpace current and legacy solutions, such as the I2C 1 MHz speed and analog passive quick switches. Renesas continues to be the I3C technology leader with a robust lineup of I3C bus extension devices for platform control, efficiency, power savings, high speeds, safety, and security.

The new FemtoClock2 family includes ultra-low jitter clock generators and jitter attenuators in a small 4×4 mm2 package, enabling cost-effective and simple clock tree implementation for next-generation, high-speed interconnect designs.

Featuring best-in-class jitter as low as 64fs RMS, FemtoClock2 enables customers to easily meet next-generation PAM4 requirements on new switch or router designs. With a 4×4 mm2 form factor, the FemtoClock2 family is less than one third the size of similar solutions on the market. This allows designers to place the clock source at the point of use – very close to the device receiving the clock signal – for streamlined PCB layout design, reduced cross talk, and cleaner signals. Flexibility makes the family useful in many applications. FemtoClock2 can be configured as a DCO, clock generator, or jitter attenuator, offering valuable design flexibility and reuse.

FemtoClock2 also works seamlessly with systems using the recently introduced PTP Clock Manager software for IEEE 1588 support, and can be combined with Renesas’ complementary power and microcontroller offerings to create comprehensive solutions for a variety of applications, such as the IEEE 1588 Winning Combination. FemtoClock2 also serves as the downstream clock capable of delivering 100fs at the pin without disrupting the synchronization.

RX MCU Obtains CMVP Level 3 Certification Under NIST FIPS 140-2 Security Standard

TOKYO, Japan ― Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced that its 32-bit RX65N microcontroller (MCU) has achieved Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) (Note 1) Level 3 certification under the FIPS 140-2 security standard by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The RX65N is the world’s first general-purpose MCU to obtain level 3 certification (Note 2).

The FIPS 140 standard is an essential security requirement for applications used by government agencies, financial institutions, public facilities, and infrastructure, and it is becoming a de facto standard for security worldwide. Level 3 is a high security level with tamper detection/response and identity-based authentication mechanisms for devices used to handle financial information such as hardware security modules (HSMs) and smart cards. Using the certified RX65N MCU will make it easier for customers to develop devices with robust and trustworthy security functions, which will contribute to a reduction in the development workload and reduced overall security risks.

“As more IoT devices gain network connectivity, the danger of malicious threats such as data leaks, data tampering, and spoofing grows, making security more important than ever,” said Sakae Ito, Vice President of IoT Platform Business Division at Renesas. “The CMVP Level 3 certification of an RX MCU means that customers can build robust security into their products without the need for a dedicated security chip, and I am delighted that this will help speed up the development of secure IoT devices.”

The 32-bit RX65N from Renesas is a general-purpose MCU with security, connectivity, and human-machine interface (HMI) functions suited for use in applications such as industrial and IoT devices. The RX65N incorporates the Trusted Secure IP (TSIP) module, which was already CAVP certified (Note 3). The TSIP, which comprises an encryption engine with AES, SHA, RSA, and ECC support, a true random number generator (TRNG), and an encrypted key management mechanism, implements robust security functions. The RX65N features dual-bank flash memory that supports background operation and SWAP function to enable secure and highly reliable firmware updates in system control or network devices and to prevent program tampering.

Since the RX65N is CMVP Level 3 certified, the other RX Family MCUs with the same TSIP, the RX651, RX66N, RX72N, and RX72M can implement the security functionality equivalent.

Renesas also offers a “Secure Cloud & Sensor Solution” that combines the RX65N with Renesas sensors to allow users to upload sensor data to cloud services securely and easily. This is one of over 200 “Winning Combinations” that combine Renesas’ expertise in analog, power, and embedded computing to help customers get to market faster.

Joins the TCFD Consortium to Promote Transparency on Climate-Related Financial Risks and Opportunitie

TOKYO, Japan ― Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has signed up to support the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) and joined the Japan-based TCFD Consortium. By becoming active members of these climate-focused industry bodies, Renesas demonstrates its commitment to more transparent financial disclosures with special emphasis on managing risks and opportunities related to climate change.

Founded by the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the TCFD is an international organization that develops recommendations for more effective climate-related disclosures and provides guidance on addressing the financial impact of climate change for market participants. Most recently, the organization published a report in 2017 with climate-related financial analysis and disclosures intended for lenders, insurers, investors and other stakeholders. The Japan-based TCFD Consortium was formed in 2019, as a forum for domestic TCFD members to develop effective disclosures and help financial institutions to make informed investment decisions.

To help build a sustainable society, Renesas is taking action to mitigate its impact on climate change. As part of this effort, the company is actively participating in semiconductor industry initiatives and has taken steps to reduce energy usage to meet targets defined by the electronics and appliance industry and the Japanese Energy Conservation Act.

Renesas has been proactively disclosing information on ESG activities to stakeholders including both financial and non-financial materials.By endorsing the TCFD recommendations and through its activities of the consortium, Renesas will broaden its business strategy to take into account climate science and make informed decisions on how to mitigate risks and maximize opportunities. These disclosures will encompass four areas: Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Indicators and Goals. Furthermore, Renesas will aggressively pursue reducing greenhouse gas emissions to meet its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

About the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures
On December 4, 2015, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) established the industry-led Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) with Michael R. Bloomberg as Chair. The Task Force currently has four Vice Chairs and 32 members in total. The TCFD was asked to develop voluntary, consistent climate-related financial disclosures for use by companies in providing information to lenders, insurers, investors and other stakeholders, which were published in the TCFD Recommendations Report on June 29, 2017. Latest Qualcomm reference design extends 30W wireless charging to mid-tier smartphones

TOKYO, Japan ― Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, has expanded its ongoing work with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a leader in wireless technologies, to include 30W wireless charging capabilities for mid-range smartphones powered by the latest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 780G 5G Mobile Platform. This is the second high-power wireless charging smartphone reference design collaboration for the two companies. The first solution, designed for flagship devices, is sampling commercially now. This latest phase is a significant step that extends the global leaders’ collaboration to bring highly integrated, advanced wireless power features as a standard feature in 5G smartphones from flagship to mainstream devices.

Qualcomm Technologies’ 5G mobile reference designs provide turnkey solutions that are intended to facilitate smartphone OEMs to quickly and cost effectively implement fast wireless charging on flagship and mid-range smartphones, with Multi-Time Programmability (MTP) and OTA updates to simplify software development and Qi certification process. The Renesas solution offers the highest integration with over 85% end-to-end system efficiency to help expand the reach of wireless power technology to an even broader set of customers and simplify the process of adding wireless charging.

The Renesas P9412 wireless power receiver is the industry’s first 30W power receiver with a high voltage integrated capacitor divider, offering superior power efficiency with 40-percent reduction in solution size compared with conventional solutions and freeing up PCB area for customers to include other features. For a safe and fast charging experience, a custom high-power protocol is embedded in the device firmware, allowing the system to authenticate power transfer beyond the 15W defined by WPC EPP standard. Renesas’s WattshareTM technology enables the mobile device to become a power source and wirelessly charge accessories in the ecosystem, such as earbuds and smart watches.
